Sam And Nelly

Three trains, taxis, walking, hotel, walking again. Milan, what a gorgeous city you are! But now I have no time to visit you, I’ve got to go see my idol, the moment I have been dreaming of for a long time…

It’s 5.30 pm I just checked in at the hotel, left my bag and showered, now I don’t wanna waste more time, let’s go to the venue. I open twitter and see that some fans already met her, I missed it, damn! But still I was too excited for the concert, to listen to the songs that have made an impact in my life LIVE. I arrive to the venue at around 6.15 pm and there’s three stands with some t-shirts I bought two, very girlish, but do I care? Nope.

I put myself in line, the doors should have opened at 7pm but it was postponed to 8pm. I didn’t have physical tickets, I had to retire them at ticket-one point. So I go wait in line at another door, me and my friend were the only waiting there, well that was a +1 for me. Nelly’s people from backstage started coming out from the door I was standing in front of. Demo came out first and then Kathryn, I am such a shy guy and I saw them running so I didn’t wanna either disturb them or make them feel uncomfortable. But then I said to myself “Sam just say hi!”. So I first spoke with Kathryn: she’s beautiful! – and then with Demo: this guy is such a nice guy, he was very kind to introduce himself giving me the hand and then spend some words for a short chit chat. Thanks man!
But they were not the only who went outside the venue. I saw him, the man we always see in the pictures with Nelly but it’s not her husband nor her brother, it’s her friend, part of her team, Andres Recio! He’s so nice, my friend who almost does his same job, noticed how him and everybody in the team, is very cool with the fans. Sometimes you’d expect that a celebrity’s team doesn’t care about the fans at all, but not them. Cool, cool, coooool people!

Doors open! 8pm

The concert started at 9.15 pm circa and I’ve got my first row place, +2! The first going up on stage was Celia Palli. She’s wonderful, her voice is one of those that make you wonder “is this live or playback?” No it was a filled-with-emotions live singing, beautiful voice, she sang songs from her new album available at www.celiapalli.com. She sang about three songs, I really wish it was longer. What fascinated me about Celia the most is that she is so charming, beautiful girl, beautiful smile and she’s so passionate when she sings that you cannot fall in love with her if you see her live. She’s a very down to earth girl trying to make her music be heard and trust me, her music is really worth it. One day I know I will go to see a concert of hers, watch out for this girl, ’cause she’s going to BOMB!

Second support act is Dylan Murray, Nelstar’s record signed artist. This guy is so charming as well, his voice, the lyrics he sings and the beautiful melody of his songs are sweet enough to turn your mood happy. I loved “Inspiration” a lot as well as the others. I must admit something though, the crowd was very rude to make people like me who wanted to listen to him, feel uncomfortable, there was a mess going on with two girls behind me. B-tches. But Dylan, oh boy, your music is pure inspiration…!

Then it’s time for herself, the one and only, Nelly Furtado.
Okay so this was my very first Nelly concert and I had no idea how I could react when she would come up on stage. If I would start screaming like a 12 years old girl or I would cry and start saying the most random uncomprehensible things I could say or…I don’t know. I didn’t know. But then she was right there in front of me walking to the microphone and my first thought was “she’s so gorgeous, she’s a doll” and I could actually smell her perfume from the crowd, it was fiiiiiine. My reaction consisted in me having a 32 teeth smile and blurry eyes.

The opening song was Spirit Indestructible, this song along with Try, I’m like A Bird, Powerless, All Good Things (which she sang them all) really means a lot to me. So inside I was having mixed emotions, happiness because I had Nelly in front of my eyes, melancholic because bad memories came up, suddenly.
That said, the concert was already “started”. With this, I mean that there hasn’t been a boring moment, since second 0 until the end, it was fun fun fun!

HIGHLIGHTS:
My personal highlight is while dancing to Big Hoops I make a random dance move, Nelly spots that and does it too. That was HILARIOUS!

Vocally wise, Nelly Furtado is a master of that. She really knows how to sing! If somebody says the opposite get ready for stabbing.

My all-time favorite live performance is “Try”. When the moment to sing it at the Milan concert came I was speechless. Sick vocals!

Other highlights are “Be Ok” featuring Dylan Murray on stage, when love gets in the air!
And the dance music part with “Hold Up”, “Maneater”, “Give It To Me”, “Mysterious (Promiscuous) Girl” is something very badass.

Overall I’d say, or better, I’d confirm that Nelly Furtado is an amazing performer, a wonderful person and the most passionate about music artist I’ve ever MET.

The concert ended at 11.50 pm.

It’s time to wait for her outside! While waiting with few other fans I recognize Fabio from the italian fan club and he recognizes me too. Really nice guy, we chit chatted a bit about Nelly. Andres Recio comes out (with whom I spoke earlier) and points at me. He lets me in backstage.
I was shaking, excited, cold, happy, shocked. Oh gosh!
Outside of her dressing room I was waiting for THE moment. The doors open. It’s not her. Fake alert, almost got an heart attack. Doors open again, it’s her!
Smiling in all her beauty here she comes Nelly saying with her really cute voice “Hello!” and I go to her and hug her. “So you’re the face behind nelly furtado daily!” couldn’t believe she said that. We started talking about the show, how amazing it was and Andres, so kindly, was taking a video of the moment. Then we went for a photo and autographs. While autographing my “The Spirit Indestructible” copy I told her how the title track inspired me and that the album is now my favorite. She looked like she was in a rush to be honest, but that’s comprehensible, many fans outside were waiting for her and I bet she had a lot to do before going to Slovenia. I am very appreciative to her for taking time to meet the creator of Nelly Furtado Daily! So she says bye and goes back to her dressing room. I was taken to the door by Andres, said goodbye to Demo who told me “Sam, I bet now you have some update to do!”…yeah I do!!!
Back outside, time to go back to the Hotel!

This year I’ve been doing so many crazy experiences, this is one of them. I’m proud of having met Nelly, to have told that her music means a lot to me and to have achieved another of my Bucket List’s points!

Thank You Nelly, Demo, Andres, Celia, Kathryn, Dylan, Sean, Dean and all those who made the tour happen!
Sincerely Sam xoxo

“Just like a lot of my albums, actually. I have very few albums that debut high,” Furtado tells AOL Music Blog

“I’ve had kind of everything happen to me commercially and at different levels,” she says. “I’ve had different scenes and I’ve dabbled in a lot of markets so I see the music world as very global and I’m always looking for new avenues and opportunities, so one chart or anything doesn’t necessarily [mean anything.]”

“We’ll see what happens and just keep on chugging along with these songs because musically I can’t wait to perform them live. That’s my main goal,” she says.

Besides, she adds, The Spirit Indestructible is the exact album that she wanted to make, not one that was dictated by current trends, potential radio play or record sales.

“It’s a good litmus test because that means you are always happy no matter what happens,” Furtado says.

“I’m so proud of it creatively. I’ve gotten feedback that it’s a very liberating album to listen to and for me it was liberating to create it. Luckily, I have had a lot of ups and downs in my career on a commercial level, so I’m very bulletproof in that way.”

What’s a song on your album you’re particularly proud of and why?
As a writer, I’m quite proud of the song “Bucket List.” It’s quite folky, melody-wise. The concept: It’s all about having a bucket list so long that perhaps you’ve left love for the very end, and by then, it’s much too late. Rodney Jerkins produced it.

What’s a lyric or verse from the album you’re a fan of?
“All I wanted was to live a really good life with a memory reel of all the highlights.” From the song “High Life”.

Check this really interesting lowdownwithkarenbliss.com interview with Nelly, her manager Chris Smith and Interscope A&R, Thom Panunzio. They are totally answering what we’ve been asking since the release of the new stuff: Nelly’s priority from the label point of view, the commercial flop of The Spirit Indistructible (quality doesn’t reflect album sales), they mention tour for 2013 and a lot more.

“I remember the first time hearing [Big Hoops], I freaked out,” Smith tells Lowdown. “She time-released her fresh. That’s what’s on the record. She’s laughing. You time-released your fresh! How the hell did you get fresher? How the hell are you fresher 10 years later? It was real. My reaction was — ‘Damn!’ That’s really the basis of the whole campaign is getting that fresh back out there.”

Nelly revealed that a book may be coming soon. “Actually I’m right now planning an interesting addition to my album which will probably come out later than my album. It’s actually a book, ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ the book, in addition to ‘The Spirit Indestructible’ the movie on my web site where I detail and document the process of the album and the inspiration behind the songs… I would like to write a book that goes with the album and features the poetry I’ve written about the songs and some photography and artwork.”
